MEDIATION #200

Mediators hit walls. Impasses are reached. The wrong approach is to become exasperated, display frustration, even becomes a little testy. No good. You merely career towards a breakdown. The good mediator sees an impasse coming with the same speed that Muhammad Ali saw as an opponents’ right hook. Both are avoided. Leave the issue, park it and give yourself time to review another way forward. You also keep good relations with Olivia. Message to the mediator – always sees where things are going. Be alive, be alert, avoid trouble.

You move on to meet the CEO. This is less challenging. Business is good, the floatation is underway. He likes Olivia with whom he has closed over the years. He knows Harry less well but has only heard good things. The CEO is relying on you to make the problem go away. He is not too interested in the detail – in the rights and wrongs. Just wants it put to bed to enable him to focus on making a significant business breakthrough. Viewed from the CEO’s perspective, his outlook makes sense. You know where your priorities lie – with Olivia and Angela, and with Olivia and Harry.

The happy outcome is for Olivia and Angela to be reconciled and for the unhappy Olivia/Harry issue to be resolved to allow both Olivia and Harry – and the CEO – to be positive about their respective futures within the Company. In years past we might term this the happy Hollywood outcome and “everybody lives happily ever after”. But life is not so simple. You still have work to do.

The starting point is Olivia. Harry sees a long term-future in the company and Harry’s wife is keen to keep a lid on the potentially explosive story because she is keen to become get the Head Teacher appointment. But can you address Olivia’s problems?
