MEDIATION #201
The CEO is not the problem. He wants it to go away so he can float his company. He is motivated to succeed + does not want his ambition thwarted by what he sees as a “personality clash” between Olivia and Harry. At the same time, you realise that Harry is a consequence of the problem + not the cause. He is unhappy but not threatening to undermine the company. If necessary, he will leave albeit with compensation but its size is unlikely to be a “deal-breaker”.
No, the problem is Olivia + you have to grasp that nettle. But that does not mean you become tetchy, irritable or offensive. Your goal is to bring about a mediated settlement + you can see a solution but it requires you to tear off some more of the leaves of the artichoke. You think through strategies. You reflect on your manner + your language. Solutions come into view. And you prepare yourself for a second – + key – meeting with Olivia.
“Olivia, there seem to be two relationships at work – you + Angela and you + Harry. Am I wrong?”. If Olivia is tense, unhappy, even emotional she may well fire off in different directions – + you have to prepare for that possibility. You will feel pressure – can you handle it?
At the same time, Olivia may, in contrast, be relieved that you are getting to the core of her problems in a manner that she finds helpful + not intrusive. She opens up + starts to talk – albeit with tears + a handkerchief clutched tightly in her hand.
In the event, you make progress. She had problems with Angela which raised questions in her own mind about her sexuality. Harry came into the story because she made approaches to him as she worked out her preferences – was she gay? Was she straight? He happened to be there. He resisted her entreaties + she retaliated and paused his career advancement. Olivia + Angela is linked to Olivia + Harry.
