Why Character? Why not Organisation or Speaking Skills or – Meeting Management?
It does not matter how much you have studied the Manual for Mediation + noted how to present the opening session or how to have separate meetings or how to move from Positions to Interests
These points are important + you have to understand them, marshal them and organise them or you will fail.
So why do I bang on about character? After all, if you have absorbed the techniques of mediation you are home + dry aren’t you? Well, No. It is not enough. You need something more. The parties have to warm to you; be willing to trust you to do a good job; + listen to your every word + become convinced that you are the right person. They have to respect you. Recognise your abilities. Accept you as a leader who can succeed.
And that is all about trust + character. They have to be persuaded that they can confide in you, reveal their innermost thoughts, open up to emotion + feeling.
They will do it if they see you as a person of character. Your personal standards are crucial.
