MEDIATION #221
The Pub Assault has caught the public eye + threatens to derail the Mediators’ Initiative. A report does appear in the local paper + the issue is reported on local radio stations. The three alleged assailants do appear in court with legal representation. The identity of the alleged victim is not revealed but WE CHAT provides sufficient details to undermine her privacy.
The Mediators recognise that their initiative is under threat as racist elements raise their profile with angry denunciations. The “Refugees Out” call, however, is muted because one of the three defendants is a local white youth.
The Mediators act. They meet together with the three-person representatives of the Ukrainians, the Yemenis + the Local Citizens in a make-or-break effort to save the Mediation Initiative. The Mediators are put to the test. Much rests on how they handle themselves; the approach they adopt; the words they use and the proposals they make. Two skills come into play – individual ability + mediation training. It is high risk but they prepare well. They meet together; embrace some tactics + reject others. They settle on a plan. They remind themselves that they need to be confident, and sensitive with eyes wide open. They are being put to the test.
They cannot – and do not – comment on the case but instead focus on the progress that has been made with the funds from the five Local Entrepreneurs; the ”£ for £” support from the Government; the likelihood that 275 extra bedrooms will become available and the growing commitment of each of the Three Groups – the Ukrainians, the Yemenis and the Local Citizens.
The Mediators – gently but effectively – bring into play the leadership role of the nine representatives at the meeting and encourage each of them to see the whole picture and not be blown off course or succumb to discordant elements off stage.
It works. The Mediation Initiative is saved. The Mediators breathe a sigh of relief. They were put to the sword but they have come through. Is everything now plain sailing?
