COMMENT FOR THE DAY #88
EPISODE 3

The Clock is ticking. The cleaners have not arrived but are edging closer to Holborn Tube.
Will the Board agree to press ahead with the 15/30 solution or settle for an adjournment of two months
15m – prepare reply submissions + 30 m to deliver.

Is the proposed action fair or is it a ‘serious irregularity?
You discuss. Two Board members agree with the proposed action noting they are merely a comment on any new points.
The time given to the trade rep is not unreasonable or unfair.
Two of the Board members are apprehensive. 1 becomes convinced, 1 stands firm.

You as chair agree that the proposed is reasonable so it is 4-1.
But, please, even with the clock ticking no bulldozing of the 1. Yes, time is limited but the discussion still has to be had.

OK – it remains 4-1. You know the decision is contentious. Prepare your thoughts, even your words.
Check them with colleagues and – when agreed – back into the hearing room.
And deliver them at an even pace and don’t be afraid to make eye contact with both reps
You are the chair – you need to exude authority but without being overbearing.

And then… light the blue touch paper!
