MEDIATION ##197
THE MEDIATOR MEETS AND LISTENS
You proceed to meet with the three parties – Harry, Olivia and the CEO. Rather than bring them together, you prefer to meet with them separately – Harry and Olivia at their respective homes and the CEO at the Head Office.
Harry and his wife, Christine are a together couple. Their two children are at school so you, the Mediator, have relaxed time with them together. You take the initiative and using good personal skills you enable the couple to become calm and fluent in their narrative. Clearly, Harry told Christine of Olivia’s advances at the time and trust, and affection, between them is strong.
If there is an issue, it relates to Christine’s career ambitions. She wants to become a Head and a vacancy has been notified to her at a Church of England Primary School. It occurs to her, and to you as well, that her intended application to the post could be undermined if the media learned that her husband’s own career had been stalled because of alleged sexual overtures from Olivia. As Christine talks on the issue , she becomes a little intense. She wants the Head position and salacious gossip about Olivia and Harry could stymie the application. Christine is keen that a lid is kept on Harry’s issue.
That apart, Harry realises that he has career options; he can leave and look elsewhere for employment. Or he can stay but what to do about Olivia and her advances to him. It is also clear that if he has to leave, he wants compensation.
The Mediator thinks about next steps. She would prefer to see the CEO but realises that Olivia would likely be miffed if she was the third person to meet with the Mediator. So you contact Olivia – she is expecting your call. She suggests that the meeting now takes place at the Institute of Directors and you also call the CEO to arrange the third meeting.
